Josh’s picks: Marion County and Callaway are both in GHSA football semifinal games
Two area teams find themselves one win away from state football championship appearances.
Marion County, which beat Lincoln County 28-21 last week, hosts Pelham. The winner earns a spot in the 1A public state championship.
Callaway, which beat Douglass 41-20, hosts Brooks County with a place in the 2A state championship on the line.
I’m 0-1 already this week with Central’s loss Wednesday night in the Alabama 7A state championship. Here are my picks for the penultimate week of Georgia prep football.
Marion 24, Pelham 21
Trice McCannon is a good enough quarterback to single-handedly win a game on his own, and running back Brandon Thomas is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. The Eagles won a tight one last week, and will host Pelham as the winner moves on to the 1A state title. Marion has never lost to Pelham.
- When: 7:30 p.m., Friday
- Where: Marion County
- All-time series: Marion County leads 2-0
Callaway 40, Brooks County 21
Callaway hosts the first semifinal game at Callaway Stadium in more than a decade Friday, and does so against a Brooks County team that has four losses (though three of those came against non-region foes). Callaway has cruised to relatively easy wins since its win over Bremen on Oct. 4, and running back and Auburn commit Tank Bigsby just earned a five-star ranking from 247Sports. There’s been little reason to pick against Callaway this season.

- Where: Callaway Stadium, LaGrange, Ga.
- All-time series: Tied 1-1
