CENTRAL STANDOUT HEADED TO LONE STAR STATE

The highest rated unsigned area prospect from Alabama, Central’s Mike Harris was long considered to be leaning toward Arkansas. He decommitted from the Razorbacks on Jan. 10, then visited Ole Miss four days later.

Harris, a 6-foot, 180 pound safety, received an offer from Baylor on Jan. 28, took his official visit three days later. The three-star (247 Sports Composite) recruit is projected to pick the Bears after shutting down his recruitment on Feb. 2.

Harris signed with the Bears Wednesday morning at a signing ceremony at Central.

“(Baylor) showed me open arms,” Harris said. “It was like a family everywhere I went. To win a championship, you need family.”

Other Red Devils who made their college choices were:

  • Chase Alexander, Mississippi Valley State
  • Byron Jenkins, Faulkner University
  • Vontavious Maddox, Clarke Atlanta University
  • Robert Marsh III, Troy University (preferred walk on)
  • Gerald Palmer, Faulkner University
  • Brent “B.J.” Randolph, Valdosta State University
  • Jon Stephens, Huntingdon College

PLAYER OF THE YEAR SIGNS FOR VALDOSTA

Carver standout running back Khiari McCoy is headed to south Georgia.

McCoy officially signed for Valdosta State Wednesday morning at a signing ceremony at Carver High. He sported a bright red cap and red loafers while announcing his decision.

Stopping — or even just slowing down — McCoy was no easy task for defenders in 2019.

The Ledger-Enquirer’s 2019 All-Bi-City Player of the Year, McCoy ran for 1,959 yards as a senior, averaging over 171 yards rushing per game. He added 22 rushing touchdowns and three receiving scores.

McCoy finished his senior season with 2,269 all-purpose yards as Carver won region 1-4A for the first time since 2015. The Tigers compiled a one-loss regular season and were the only team in the region to finish with an unbeaten region record.

The Tigers scored 40 or more points in seven games. McCoy, at one point, scored 11 touchdowns over two games.

McCoy said he knew Valdosta was the right place for him when he stepped on campus for his official visit.

Several other Tigers also made their college choices:

  • Richard Nelson, Shorter University
  • Ja’Corey Harper, Morehouse
  • Jailen Williams, Miles College
  • Savieon Colbert, Fort Valley State
  • Travin Jones, Tennessee State
  • Ja’Vaun Wooden, Columbus State

ARKANSAS COMMIT MAKES IT OFFICIAL

Troup defensive lineman Andy Boykin, who started out as a tight end at rival LaGrange, quickly blossomed into one of the area’s top defensive linemen once he made the switch to defense. He visited Arkansas the weekend before Signing Day, and made his decision official on Wednesday, signing for Arkansas.

Boykin said he and Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman have a “great relationship.” Pittman visited with Boykin, his family and Glisson last week. Boykin called Pittman a “very genuine and classy person.”

“I was told by an SEC recruiter one time, that they can go 150, 200 miles and find really good skill guys,” Glisson said. “But you can’t find 275-pound defensive linemen.

“He has something that was a God-given ability, that you just can’t teach. That everybody wants and everybody’s in the market for.”
