Calvary Christian hires new athletic director who has ties to another local school
Calvary Christian on Wednesday announced the hiring of Marty Durden as the school’s new athletic director, filling the opening left by former AD Ray Honea.
Durden will assume his duties at Calvary in early July, according to a school spokesperson.
Durden served as the athletic director at Presbyterian School in Houston, Texas, for the previous nine years. Since 1974, he has served in multiple roles including high school principal, headmaster, teacher and more. Durden also served as the Chair of Physical Education and coached multiple sports at Brookstone School.
Durden was at Brookstone for 16 years and served as a golf coach for 11 of those, a run that included 10 region championships and back-to-back Class A team state titles in 2010-11.
“We love to have such an experienced leader in sports and education joining our school, but what really has us excited is his commitment to training young men and young women to be all they can be as athletes who are made in the image of God, “ Calvary Headmaster Jim Koan said. “He has a heart to build disciples.”
Durden graduated from Bob Jones University with a bachelor’s in physical education, and earned his master’s in both secondary education and educational leadership from Troy.
Most recently he earned his Doctor of Education at United States Sports Academy.
Honea, who had been the athletic director since July 2016, turned in a letter of resignation in early January.
