Columbus Cottonmouths win second straight

Levi Lind forced overtime with a goal at 18:28 of the final period, then the Columbus Cottonmouths beat Pensacola in a shooutout 3-2 on Saturday night.

It was Columbus} second straight win. The Snakes beat Huntsville 4-3 on Friday. That ended an eight-game losing streak.

After two scoreless periods, Pensacola got goals from Corey Banfield and Stephen Buco in the first 1:13 of the third period.

Chris Rial cut the deficit in half with a goal at 8:46 with assists from Rusty Hafner and Andy Bathgate.

Lind then scored the tying goal with an assist from Hafner.

After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout.

Hafner couldn't convert, but Cody Freeman, Tyler Henry and Lind did. Meanwhile, none of the four scored for the Ice Flyers.

Brandon Jaeger stopped 36 of 38 shots to pick up the win in goal.

With the win, Columbus moved into a tie with Macon for eighth place in the nine-team SPHL. Both trail Louisiana by three. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

Columbus hosts Mississippi at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Snakes will trying to match their season-high win streak of three games (Dec. 23-26-27 vs. Fayetteville, Huntsville and Pensascloa).
