A 72-year-old has been identified as the man who died after the vehicle he was traveling in collided with a stolen SUV in Phenix City during a police chase, Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said.

Frank McLemore of Smiths Station, Ala. was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m. Sunday at the Columbus Midtown Medical Center. His body will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.

A woman who was a traveling in the Nissan Murano McLemore was sent to the hospital for treatment. Her current condition is not available at this time.

Phenix City police were called to the intersection of Crawford Road and 17th Avenue around 7:34 p.m. Saturday to investigate a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

Officials said Columbus police were chasing 18-year-old Dezhaun Shynotez Dumas as he fled in a Honda CRV reported stolen in Columbus. Robert Fletcher, 18, was a passenger in the Honda when it collided with the Nissan, according to police.

Dumas and Fletcher were taken into custody and transported to the hospital.

In Phenix City, Dumas faces one count of murder, second-degree assault and bringing stolen property across state line. Once he’s been released from the hospital, he will be extricated to Georgia to face one count each of fleeing to elude, aggressive driving, reckless driving, driving while license suspended, running a red light and failure to maintain lane.

Fletcher faces one count of theft by receiving stolen property in Columbus. He has been released from the hospital and booked in the Muscogee County Jail.

He is set to appear in Recorder’s Court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
