Thousands of Floridians made their way to Georgia to escape Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 hurricane that made landfall Wednesday night.

Ahead of the storm, state officials worked to open shelters and communicate with evacuees about where to go.

As hotels and shelters filled, governments, businesses and nonprofits sprung into action to provide food, water and supplies to those who fled. Here’s where evacuees can go to find essential supplies.

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross opened eight shelters in Georgia, many of which are handing out supplies and offering services to keep evacuees safe and healthy until they can return home.

Shelters are providing meals, snacks and bottled water, as well as giving out emergency supplies to help evacuees clean up after the storm. They have charging stations for phones and other devices to help evacuees stay connected.

The shelters also have services that include mental health counseling, the opportunity to meet with case workers and plan the next steps in the recovery process, and medical services to fill lost prescriptions or get first aid.

A map of shelters and their services can be found on the Red Cross website.

State parks and facilities

Parks and facilities across Georgia have opened their doors to provide shelter and resources to Floridians fleeing Hurricane Milton.

Georgia state parks are open for RVs and campers. Several have cottage spaces available, and many have bathroom and shower spaces. Evacuees are encouraged to call ahead to check parks’ availability. A map of parks and their phone numbers can be found online.

Many privately owned campsites are also opening to Hurricane Milton evacuees, and the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Henry County opened to take people.

Nonprofits and churches

In addition to resources from local and state governments, many nonprofits and churches are offering support to people fleeing the hurricane.

Centenary United Methodist Church in Macon is providing shelter, including cribs and spaces for babies and small children.

Maynard Baptist Church in Forsyth opened as a Red Cross Shelter, and is also providing essential items to evacuees such as soap, blankets, deodorant and paper towels.
