Columbus construction projects, including roundabouts, will continue in COVID-19 pandemic

Some construction projects will continue as usual across the city during COVID-19 outbreak including roundabouts, bridge replacements and more.

All ongoing projects across Columbus are deemed “essential services” because of the potential impact to city infrastructure, according to Donna Newman, director of engineering for the City of Columbus.

Some of these projects include the completion of the River Road Roundabout project, which was approved by Columbus City Council in July 2018 and the Fort Benning Road Roundabout and Streetscapes project, which was also approved in 2018.

The full list of projects include:

• River Road Roundabout project (expected completion date: by the end of April)

• Fort Benning Road Roundabout/Streetscapes project (expected completion date: end of summer 2020)

• Calumet Bridge Replacement Project (awaiting final utility relocation to begin)

• Claradon Avenue Bridge Replacement (will begin in the next few months)

• Phase I of the Buena Vista Road/Spiderweb Project (will begin in the next few months)

“We expect minimal impacts to the schedule for these projects unless further mandates are issued,” Newman said.

Any contractors with active projects under contract with the city have been given a letter that allows them to travel to and from construction sites. According to Newman, the city is recommending that they follow safety guidelines and any additional mandates from Gov. Brian Kemp’s executive order, which was issued on April 1.

They are also recommending following the guidelines put in place by their respective companies.
