Funeral arrangements are set for Harris County High School head baseball coach Tony Dimitri, who died Saturday in an ATV accident.

His celebration of life service will be at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at Cascade Hills Church in Columbus, according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Dimitri’s obituary hasn’t been published, but a news release from the Harris County School District announcing his hiring in 2023 provides this information about him:

He began his coaching career in 2006 at Monroe Area High School in Walton County, where he was assistant varsity baseball coach and head junior varsity baseball coach. As the JV head coach, Dimitri led his team to the program’s first winning record in school history.

After returning to Columbus in 2007, Dimitri joined HCHS as the assistant varsity baseball coach and ninth-grade head football coach until 2011.

Dimitri returned to his alma mater, Jordan Vocational High School, where he was the head varsity baseball coach and co-athletics director for the next 10 years.

Jordan’s baseball program hadn’t qualified for the state playoffs in the 14 previous seasons. But in his second season as head coach, Dimitri led the Red Jackets to 20 wins. They reached the state playoffs six times and made it to the Sweet 16 in 2018.

Dimitri was selected as the Georgia Southwest All-Star Coach in 2017.

As the head baseball coach for Russell County High School, Dimitri led the Warriors in 2023 to a 14-12 record — 10 more wins than the previous year.

Dimitri’s father, Anthony, was a member of Jordan’s 1971 state championship team and was the baseball program’s head coach and athletics director for 18 years. He died in 2008.

Tony’s twin brother, John, also played and coached at Jordan. John is the head softball coach and athletics director at Marion County High School.

Jordan is scheduled to host a candlelight vigil on the school’s baseball field Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m., to honor Dimitri’s life.
