Suspect in fatal Joyner Drive shooting was ‘looking for a fight’ with victim, cop says
A Columbus teen charged in a September fatal shooting at a Joyner Drive residence came to the home “looking for a fight,” according to police testimony in Recorder’s Court Friday.
Markeivious Reviere, 17, plead not guilty to a murder charge in the fatal shooting of Kaleb Morning. Reviere was taken into custody Thursday.
On Sept. 20, Reviere arrived at Morning’s home on Joyner Drive with the intention to fight the victim, Sgt. D.D. Baker said in court.
Police were called to the scene around 4:52 p.m. Witnesses told officers that during the altercation, Reviere hit Morning with the gun and then shot at the 16 year old twice before running from the scene, Baker said.
As officers began their investigation, they found a man matching the description given by witnesses. He identified himself as Reviere and gave officers his phone number, Baker said.
Using cell tower data, investigators were able to determine that Reviere was at the victim’s home around the time the shooting occurred, Baker said.
Antonio Brown, Morning’s uncle, spoke on behalf of his family in front of the court, saying that he wanted justice for his nephew.
“We are standing here in solidarity today,” he said. “This was an altercation between kids that didn’t have to end this way.”
Reivere will remain at the Muscogee County Jail with no bond as the case moves to Superior Court. Judge Maureen Gottfried issued a no contact order between Reviere and any known associates with the Morning family.
Morning’s death marked the 52nd homicide of 2021 for Columbus. The total so far this year is 56.
