16 year old arrested in Columbus shooting on Canaan Drive that left two teens dead

A teen has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a shooting that left two dead in Columbus, the Columbus Police Department announced Tuesday.

The 16-year-old male suspect was arrested Jan. 2 on unrelated charges in Fairburn, according to police. The Ledger-Enquirer typically does not name suspects under the age of 18.

Police said the 16-year-old has been extradited to Columbus and detained at the Regional Youth Detention Center.

The shooting happened Nov. 27 on Canaan Drive in Columbus that led to the deaths of J’Mauri Taylor, 18, and Dai’John Ross, 18, police said.

The teen has been charged with murder (malice), murder (felony), armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, possessing a gun during the commission of a crime, illegally possessing guns or weapons, and possessing a pistol/revolver under the age of 18, police said.

He’s been charged with the two counts of murder and armed robbery under Georgia Senate Bill 440, a law that provides guidelines for charging juvenile suspects between the ages of 13 and 17 as adults, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections website.

The teen is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court at 8 a.m. Thursday, police said.
