Ledger-Enquirer high school recruiting roundup | June 1, 2017
We’ve reached the peak of recruiting season for several sports, which means many athletes will be receiving attention and scholarship offers in the upcoming months. This is the first of a weekly look around the area to provide updates on local prospects.
Football
Jontavious Ferguson, linebacker, Manchester - Ferguson verbally committed to Central Florida on May 22 but will undoubtedly still receive plenty of attention going forward. Ferguson is a three-star linebacker according to 247 Sports and has nine other offers from teams such as Troy, Appalachian State and Georgia State.
Caleb Johnson, linebacker, Northside - Johnson, a three-star linebacker per 247 Sports, has 12 FBS scholarship offers from schools such as Auburn, Louisville, Tennessee, LSU and Florida. Johnson has not yet made a verbal commitment and said he wants to find a school that “will help me become more than just a great football player, but a great person, too.”
Jahlil Ryles, offensive lineman, Central - A two-star offensive guard according to Rivals, Ryles is up to seven offers, according to his Twitter account. Several FBS programs are among those schools, including Connecticut, Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee.
DeAnthony Miles, defensive end, Central - Miles, who Rivals has ranked as a two-star recruit, has offers from a number of schools, including UT-Chattanooga, Austin Peay, Bethune-Cookman and Jacksonville State. According to 247 Sports, Miles took an unofficial visit to Auburn on April 9.
Deondrae Williams, defensive end, Smiths Station - Williams has three scholarship offers, including ones from Troy, Navy and the Citadel.
Tyler Moore, defensive end/tight end, Central - At this point in the summer, Moore boasts offers from Mercer, Alabama State and Appalachian State.
Kayleem Bonds, running back, Kendrick - Bonds has scholarship offers from Shorter University as well as Eastern Kentucky. He has also received interest from other schools, such as Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State and Georgia State. Regarding what he wants in a school, Bonds said, “I just want it to feel like home. I love to be around a program where everyone is a family.”
Navy Harris, safety, Kendrick - Bonds’ teammate has several options as well, receiving scholarships from West Georgia, Georgia State, Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State. Harris sounded especially impressed with Jackonsville State, saying, “It had a great atmosphere and it was very organized. They also have one of the classes I would like to major in, which is graphic design.”
Girls Basketball
Jessika Carter, Forward, Harris County - A three-star player according to ESPN.com, Carter narrowed down her college choices to 10 schools via Twitter on May 12. Her remaining options include Auburn, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Rutgers, Tennessee and Texas. Carter has not provided any further updates nor a timetable for her final decision.
Carter averaged 18.3 points per game and 14 rebounds as a junior at Harris County. As a result, she was selected as a member of the All-Bi-City 4A-7A Girls Basketball First Team.
Boys Golf
Ben Womack, Columbus - Womack committed to play for LaGrange College on May 16. As a result, three Blue Devil seniors will be playing collegiately next season: Womack, Nolan Miller (Mercer) and Daniel Davis (Georgia College).
Boys Tennis
Alex Tongson, Northside - Tongson signed to play at Point University on May 12. Tongson posted an 8-8 record as the Patriots’ No. 1 singles player in 2017. The Patriots reached the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Featured Recruit of the Week
Cameron O’Neil, wide receiver, Glenwood School. Since we last checked in on O’Neil, the 6-foot-3 wide receiver received an offer from UT-Chattanooga.
