A new storage facility could open near Lakebottom, plus more Columbus business news
Several rezoning requests have gone before the city’s Planning Advisory Committee to allow businesses to move, renovate old space or create new commercial ventures on vacant land.
Two potential developments could also be coming to the Midtown area of Columbus.
Here’s what to know about them, and an update on some previously reported developments:
Potential developments
New self-service storage in Midtown
A rezoning application for a proposed self-service storage facility has been submitted to the Planning Advisory Committee.
The 0.82 acre property is 1400 17th St., with the project name “Lakebottom Storage.” The property is vacant and currently zoned for residential office.
If approved, it would be rezoned to general commercial. This qualifies as a minor rezoning, according to the application, since it’s “not a major zoning change.”
The property, according to the application, was originally a food service vending company. It was purchased by Larry Bussey, listed on the application as the current owner, in May 2006 with plans to remodel the building into “moderately priced apartment homes.” Those plans fell through after the site was purchased due to the construction business “taking a downturn,” the application reads.
The zoning checklist for the application is 22% complete. Its first council reading is scheduled for Oct. 26.
Personal care home in Midtown
An application has been submitted to rezone the property at 1309 Wildwood Ave. to multifamily residential. According to the application, the plan is for a personal care home at the location, near Wildwood Court Apartments.
The zoning checklist is 31% complete, with the first council reading set for Oct. 12.
Approved applications
Three applications were approved by the Planning Advisory Committee and city council.
The first is a plan for a new luxury apartment complex on the north side of town.
Luxury apartments in north Columbus
Greystone Properties is planning a 240-unit apartment complex at 2395 Whittlesey Road, the Ledger-Enquirer previously reported. The company’s rezoning application for the 35-acre vacant lot near Main Street Village was approved by Council, the planning department and the Planning Advisory Committee.
Managing partner Will White said the complex will look similar to one the company owns in Auburn, Greystone Pointe. The complex will have amenities like a garden, pet spa, a “high-end fitness center” and billiards room, White said. It will have one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, according to Greystone’s website.
Greystone owns and operates around 4,000 apartment units in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee — more than 2,800 of them in Columbus. It has 10 complexes in the city.
Used car lot on Victory Drive
Council approved a rezoning application for a mixed-use development at 3072 Victory Dr.
Adams Car Sales & Repair Inc. is the project name, with the proposed use of a used car lot. Earl Adams, the applicant, was given a special exception to operate the lot.
The 0.83-acre lot is currently a mobile home/trailer park.
Gas station update
A “convenience store with gas sales,” according to a rezoning application, could be coming to the south side of Columbus. It moved forward to its second council reading, according to Principal Planner John Renfroe.
The second council reading will be Sept. 14.
It’s been approved by both the planning department and the Planning Advisory Committee.
The application is to rezone the properties at 4006, 4018 and 4026 Buena Vista Road, and the properties at 3913, 3923 and 3925 North Linden Drive to general commercial.
The Buena Vista Road properties are currently classified as “former cleaners and restaurant, office,” according to the application, while the North Linden Drive properties are zoned for residential use. The six parcels total 1.75 acres.
