Columbus area schools announce whether they will reopen after winter storm’s snow

Columbus area schools announced decisions about whether they will reopen Wednesday after a winter storm brought snow Tuesday afternoon to the Chattahoochee Valley.
Freezing weather was expected to leave treacherous conditions in the area for multiple days, according to forecasters.
Muscogee County
The Muscogee County School District will continue its virtual schedule Wednesday due to the forecasted weather conditions, MCSD announced Tuesday.
The following changes to MCSD’s regular schedule also will remain in effect:
- All field trips scheduled for Wednesday are canceled.
- All after-school activities, including athletics, are canceled.
- All MCSD school buildings and offices will remain closed.
The MCSD board meeting scheduled Tuesday at 6 p.m. will be conducted virtually and can be viewed via the district’s YouTube channel.
Decisions about MCSD’s schedule for Thursday will be announced no later than 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the news release.
Harris County
The Harris County School District has canceled all operations for Wednesday due to severe winter weather conditions, which may include freezing temperatures and precipitation expected to persist overnight, creating hazardous road conditions. This includes the cancellation of all after-school activities.
Shawn Fisher, HCSD assistant superintendent of business services and technology, said in a news release, “The safety of our school community remains our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding as we navigate these dangerous conditions.”
Chattahoochee County
After conducting a virtual learning day Tuesday, the Chattahoochee County School District will be closed Wednesday for all students and staff, ChattCo announced on its website.
After-school activities are canceled for Wednesday.
Phenix City
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has declared a State of Emergency for Russell County, so all Phenix City Schools and offices will be closed Wednesday, PCS announced on its website.
E-learning and after-school activities are canceled.
The Phenix City Board of Education work session was moved from Tuesday to Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Auxiliary Building, 1210 Ninth Ave.. The board’s monthly meeting was moved to 7 p.m., immediately following the work session.
St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School
Due to winter weather conditions, St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School will have another virtual learning day Wednesday. After-school activities are canceled.
“Teachers will communicate virtual learning assignments via email to parents of students in Pre-K through 4th grades and in Google Classroom for grades 5-12,” the news release says.
Columbus State University
Columbus State Univesity will continue virtual operations and instruction Wednesday.
Decisions regarding Thursday’s plans will be emailed to students and employees by 4 p.m. Wednesday and posted at columbusstate.edu/emergency/, CSU said in a news release.
Chattahoochee Valley Community College
CVCC offices will continue to be closed Wednesday. Classes will be conducted virtually. Instructors will provide further direction via Canvas, according to the news release
All events on campus are canceled for Wednesday.
